Introducción:
Cuando el ambiente térmico se torna estresante provoca mermas en la producción de leche y cambios en la composición de la misma (West, 2003), causando pérdidas económicas significativas en los sistemas productivos lecheros (INTA, 2011). La temperatura rectal (TR) y la frecuencia respiratoria (FR), son buenos indicadores del grado de estrés calórico que sufren los animales (Johnson, 1987) y pueden ser monitoreados fácilmente en el campo, por lo cual resultan ser una herramienta muy práctica. Conociendo el efecto negativo del ambiente sobre las variables productivas y fisiológicas, es factible la utilización de medidas de mitigación como la modificación física del ambiente (Beede y Collier, 1986) entre ellos la utilización de sombras, aspersores y ventiladores. Nuestra hipótesis, asume que las condiciones meteorológicas del suroeste uruguayo, durante el verano, provocan estrés térmico que se evidenciaría a través de aumentos en la temperatura interna y frecuencia respiratoria y reducirían la productividad de las vacas lecheras de alta producción. Por otro lado la utilización de diferentes técnicas de mitigación reducirían dicho efecto. Así entonces, el objetivo del trabajo fue cuantificar el efecto del ambiente estival y el uso de diferentes medidas de mitigación de estrés térmico sobre las respuestas fisiológicas (TR y FR) y productivas de vacas lecheras Holstein de alta producción. |

Native grasslands represent one of the largest natural ecosystems in the Southern Cone of South America and in the world. Around 70 million hectares in Central-East Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil are the main support of livestock production. Mainly beef and sheep production are the activities of high economical relevance in the region with human and social implications. Its relevance is identified at regional level and also in the International Agenda. The joint IGC and IRC in 2008 remarked the importance of natural grasslands areas to provide environmental and productive solutions to demands of a growing world population. However, natural resources and traditional production systems are under extreme degradation/reduction as a consequence of intensification of the agriculture and forestry that are competing for land use in the region , with a significant reduction of biodiversity of genetic resources. |
